What is Epiretinal Membranes?
Small amounts of scar tissue can sometimes develop on the surface of the retina, usually in the centre where the macular is. This is known as an epiretinal membrane or macular pucker. As this is the area which is important for central and detailed vision, it can cause blurring, distortion or even double vision in patients.
Risk Factors
This condition can happen in healthy eyes with no previous problems, but also more common if you have had previous eye injuries or surgery, like lasers, retinal tears, or retinal detachments.
Treatment for Epiretinal Membranes
Treatment for this involves a vitrectomy, a surgery where the vitreous gel in the eye is removed, and only after that, can we then peel this scar tissue off from the retinal surface.
