(English) Why is Eye Screening Important?

(English) Eye screening enables early detection of potentially sight-threatening eye conditions. Many eye conditions go unnoticed in their early stages. It may be too late for treatment when your vision becomes affected. Remember to include eye tests when you go for your regular health screening.

Screening tests help detect eye diseases that may not yet be noticed by you. These screening packages are not for those who already have an illness on follow-up with an eye doctor. Early detection and timely treatment of these conditions can often prevent any permanent vision loss.

This is especially important if you have:

  • High short-sightedness of more than 600 degrees (-6 diopters)
  • Diabetes Mellitus
  • Family history of eye conditions such as glaucoma or age-related macular degeneration

(English) A List of Tests That Can Be Done

(English)

Visual acuity

Tests for distance vision using a Snellen chart or Sheridan-Gardiner cards (for children) and near vision using an N-notation near test chart.

Tonometry

Checks the eye pressure for basic glaucoma screening.

Auto-refraction

Measures the refractive power of your eyes using a computerised device.

Refraction

Tests the refractive power of your eyes for the prescription of spectacles. Refraction with cycloplegia is a similar test for young children whereby their ciliary muscles (eye muscles) are relaxed by eye drops to obtain a more accurate reading. If you are wondering whether your spectacle power has increased, do bring along records of your previous spectacle power from your optometrist if you have them.

Slit-lamp examination

Detects abnormalities such as corneal diseases and cataract by performing a detailed bio-microscopic examination of the front part of your eyes.

Red reflex examination

Screens for abnormalities in the ocular media such as cataract and retinal diseases.

Retina & optic disc evaluation

A detailed examination of the back of your eyes to detect diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma.

Corneal pachymetry

Measures the corneal thickness of your eyes using a computerised device.

Cover/uncover test

Detects squints (misaligned eyes) which may cause amblyopia (lazy eyes).

Dry eye evaluation

Checks for the presence and the severity of dry eyes, a common eye condition in computer users, contact lens wearer, post-LASIK patients and elderly.

Amsler grid test

Screens for abnormalities or distortion in the macular area responsible for central vision.

Heidelberg Retinal Tomography III scan

Three-dimensional imaging of the optic nerve head using an advanced computerised equipment.

Humphrey Visual Field

Detects visual field defects in advanced glaucoma using a computerised instrument.

Optical Coherence Tomography scan

Three-dimensional imaging of the retinal nerve fibre layers around the optic nerve head using an advanced computerised equipment.

Ishihara colour vision test

Checks for colour vision defects.

Ocular motility evaluation

Evaluates eye movement abnormalities associated with squints (misaligned eyes), nerve and muscle diseases.

All the packages include consultation with our Senior Eye Doctor.

(English) What Happens During an Eye Examination?

(English) Getting an eye checkup is painless. Typically, your eye doctor will perform a standard eye assessment, including an examination of the outer regions of your eyes, eyelids, and their surroundings. Additionally, they will examine components of your eye, such as the conjunctiva, sclera, cornea, and iris, to identify any potential indications of disease.

Most eye examinations also include:

  • Testing vision (with or without prescription glasses)
  • Assessing the reflexes of your pupils
  • Checking general eye muscles
  • Peripheral (side) vision testing
  • Examining the front of the eye using an upright microscope (a slit lamp)
  • Eye pressure tests
  • Examining the back of the eye

Things to take note of

  • Please bring your glasses during your appointment.
  • You are advised not to wear your contact lenses for the screening.
  • We will use eye drops that may temporarily blur your vision. Therefore screening will take about 2 hours to complete.
  • You are also advised not to drive after the screening

(English) How Often Should I Have My Eyes Checked?

(English)

3-5 Years Old

Your child should go for their first eye exam before the age of 5, and to go for a comprehensive eye examination at least once every two years. While in-school screenings can provide valuable information, they should not be considered a replacement for a comprehensive eye examination.

20-39 Years Old

Middle-aged adults who require corrective eyewear should visit their optometrist annually. Similarly, those with pre-existing medical conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, high blood pressure, diabetes, should undergo annual vision assessments. Those without a need for corrective lenses can extend their vision screenings to every two to three years, provided they do not experience vision or eye-related problems.

40 Years Old and Above

At the age of 40, eye examinations are conducted to screen for age-related eye conditions. This screening also has the potential to identify early indicators of diabetes, high blood pressure, and other medical conditions. Individuals without pre-existing eye conditions or corrective lenses should schedule routine vision checks with their eye doctor every one to two years.
